JBG ROSENFELD ATTRACTS T.J. MAXX TO FREE STATE
CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND – Shopping center owner JBG Rosenfeld Retail (JBGR) announced today that it has signed another national retailer for the newly developed Free State Shopping Center, marking the fifth major lease at the Bowie center since the company made public its redevelopment plans three years ago. T.J. Maxx, the nation’s largest off-price apparel and home fashion retailer, recently committed to a 29,000 square-foot space at Free State, boosting the community shopping center to near 100% occupancy and complementing the already solid tenant mix, including the recently opened 73,000 square-foot prototype Super Giant, Tuesday Morning, and Ross Dress for Less and Office Depot, both slated to open next year.
“If you haven’t been to Free State in a few years, now is the time to come back,” said JBGR Principal Jim Garibaldi. “With the recent opening of the new Giant and the pad building, plus all of the cosmetic changes that have been made to the center during the redevelopment, Free State is a whole new shopping experience. The response from our longtime customers thus far has been extraordinary, and we anticipate it’s only going to get better with the opening of T.J. Maxx, Office Depot, and Ross in 2007.”
Previously renovated in 1995, Free State Shopping Center is a 277,000 square-foot Giant-anchored community shopping center located on Annapolis Road (Route 450) in Bowie, Maryland. Since 2003, massive redevelopment has been taking place at the center, including demolition of portions of the center once occupied by a mini-mall to make way for the new, state-of-the-art Giant Food store; construction of a new, 9,500 square-foot, multi-tenant pad building; plus façade upgrades, improved access and parking, and the addition of a small park and fountain setting facing Annapolis Road. Other retailers at Free State include Tuesday Morning, Blockbuster Video, Grace’s Fortune Chinese Restaurant, Sakura Japanese Steakhouse, Starbucks Coffee, Chevy Chase Bank, Rugged Wearhouse, as well as numerous other service providers.
Headquartered in Framingham, MA, and owned by The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TJX), T.J. Maxx offers brand name and designer fashions for the entire family and home at up to 60 percent less than department and specialty store prices. The Company operates more than 800 T.J. Maxx stores nationwide. The new store at Free State, formerly occupied by Total Crafts, will be situated between Performance Tae Kwon Do and the new Ross store. T.J. Maxx is scheduled to open by the summer of 2007.
