Chevy Chase, Maryland –   In an effort to update and enlarge its footprint and capitalize on the “eat at home” trend of recent years, Klein’s ShopRite of Maryland recently embarked on an expansion project at its Festival at Bel Air store in Harford County, Maryland.  Shopping center leasing, development, and management company JBG Rosenfeld Retail (JBGR), and owner of the Festival at Bel Air shopping center, finalized a deal with Klein’s earlier this year for an additional 10,000 square feet, boosting the store’s footprint to nearly 63,000 square feet.  The grocer is expanding into two storefronts formerly occupied by Famous Footwear and The Bombay Company, with the expansion work expected to be complete by summer.

“While many retail segments have suffered because of the economy over the last couple of years, grocers have been the exception to the rule,” said JBGR Executive Vice President Bob Schwenger.  “Looking for ways to save money, individuals and families are, once again, preparing meals and eating at home.  As such, grocers are responding to this ‘new’ way of life by updating and enlarging their stores and offerings to provide their customers with a pleasant shopping experience.  Klein’s expansion in Bel Air is an example of that way of thinking.”  This is the second grocery store expansion JBGR has inked in recent months; the deal with Klein’s falls on the heels of an expansion deal with Giant Eagle in Frederick, which is adding 14,000 square feet and recently opened a GetGo® gasoline station.

Founded in 1925 with a single store in Fallston, Maryland, Klein’s began as a family-owned business and continued as such until October 2008, when it joined the Wakefern Food Corporation, the retail merchandising and distribution company that supplies and supports ShopRite.  In March 2009, the Klein’s stores transitioned to the ShopRite banner, now operating as Klein’s ShopRite at seven locations throughout the Baltimore area, including the Festival at Bel Air store.  For additional information about the chain, visit www.kleinsonline.com

Encompassing 38 acres of land bound by Routes 24 and 924, Bel Air South Parkway, and East Wheel Road, Festival at Bel Air features more than 60 retailers and restaurants.  The center’s anchors include family-owned Klein’s Supermarket, Kohl’s Department Store, Marshall’s, The Room Store, Rite Aid, Panera Bread, and Buffalo Wild Wings.  JBGR acquired the center in December 2001.

Based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, JBG Rosenfeld Retail specializes in the leasing, development, acquisition, construction, and management of retail properties throughout the mid-Atlantic region.  Currently, JBGR holds more than 30 shopping centers, nine freestanding store sites, and numerous mixed-use retail sites in its portfolio.  For more information on the full scope of the company’s services, call (301) 657-0700 or visit www.jbgr.com.
